Madeup 매듭 :
Traditional Korean Knot Art
The art of ornamental knotting or Madeup is one of the oldest cultural traditions in South Korea. Over the centuries, decorative knots have been found in all aspects of daily life, to adorn various accessories and objects, such as clothing, jewelry, or even furniture.
It was under the Joseon dynasty (1392-1910) that ornamental knots experienced an unprecedented craze and creative and artistic boom, and became particularly popular during celebrations of parties and weddings. The success of this art and its dissemination in South Korean culture is partly based on the complex floral and animal aesthetic patterns that they represent but also on the symbolic dimension of the talisman they take on: happiness, luck, prosperity, protection, longevity …
Even today, the Madeup is very present in the daily life of South Koreans, while adapting to the needs and expectations, constantly generated by contemporary society.
